Create a pearl necklace using Photoshop

Here is the final effect:

Here is a video showing the key steps required:

Here are the steps in greater detail:

Create a new document 500×500

Choose two deep purple colors, one each for your foreground and background, one slightly lighter than the other

Fill your background layer with one of your purples

Create a new layer, select your other purple

Select the gradient tool. In the Gradient Picker select Foreground to Transparent, select Reflected Gradient, set the Gradient Mode to Difference

Drag several gradients across your canvas in succession at a horizontal or just off horizontal level. Switch your foreground and background colors and drag some more gradients. The effect you are looking for is a folded silk. The Difference Mode layers the gradients on top of each other. When happy merge both your layers together.

Duplicate your layer, choose Filter>Render>Lighting Effects and apply some Spotlight, Wide, Metallic light from the top left with these settings:

Turn the opacity of your lighting layer down to 70%

Create a new layer, call it Pearls

Choose a basic circular brush from the Basic Brushes palette. Choose white as for your foreground color. Open the Brushes Window. With Brush Tip Shape selected drag out the Diameter to 30, drag out your spacing so the circles are just touching (in the preview window); around 100% should do. Uncheck Shape Dynamics

Draw a necklace shape out on the canvas using your new brush, on your Pearls layer.

Add a Drop Shadow to your Pearls layer: Opacity 51, Angle 117, Distance 8, Size 6

Add an Inner Shadow: Opacity 38, Distance 4, Size 5

Add a Bevel and Emboss: Chisel Hard, Depth 51, Size 10, Soften 1, Altitude 53. Choose the Ring Gloss Contour, change the Shadow Mode Opacity to 21%

Add a Contour (beneath Bevel and Emboss), choose the Gaussian contour, click OK. You should now have a realistic looking string of pearls on your Pearls layer.

For the finishing touch, add some sparkles. Create a new layer. Choose the Crosshatch 4 brush from the Assorted brushes palette, choose white as your color and a diameter of around 60. Click once on top of a couple of your pearls to give the impression of sparkles. Make sure you click in the pearl highlights, where the sparkles would actually appear.

Done!

When confident with this technique try experimenting by creating some paths with the Pen Tool and stroking them with your pearl brush for a simple yet attractive effect. Type some text and turn it into a path, rasterize your type, make your pearl brush small and stroke around your text path to achieve something similar to this:
